Portable fire extinguishers and the venerable hose reel are what most people think about in relation to fighting a fire. There's good reason too! These types of equipment are the most visible and readily accessible should you ever need to use them.
It is vital that you purchase the correct type of fire extinguisher that matches your likely requirement to have in your factory, school, office or vehicle. If you find yourself needing to put a fire out, remember not to panic and quickly classify what type of fire hazard you are facing.
This is so you can use the appropriate type of fire extinguisher for the job. A 'Class A' fire is paper, timber, cardboard and the like. Water will easily put these out. A fire involving flammable and combustible liquids and gases is classified as Class 'B', 'C' or 'F'. These would have things like petrol, natural gas and cooking oil as the fuels. These fires require foam, powder or wet chemical fire extinguishers. If you use water on these, you will spread the fire and cause more damage.
'Class E' fires involve electricity and you should never use water or foam or wet chemical type fire extinguishers with these. The fluid can conduct electricity and cause you harm or death.
